Wicked Wednesday: Biscuits and Slashed Browns

Soon after clashing with several scientists at a maple tree panel, the professor is found dead outside a sugar shack, stabbed to death by a local restaurateur’s knife. When an innocent woman gets dragged into the investigation and a biologist mysteriously disappears, Robbie drops her winning maple biscuits to search for answers. But can she help police crack the case before another victim is caught in a sticky situation with a killer?

In honor of the newest Robbie Jordan adventure, let’s talk about breakfast, Wickeds. What is your favorite “eating out” breakfast?

Jessie: I don’t have a specific favorite place for breakfast. What I do favor is breakfast in beautiful hotels. I love to sleep in and then head down to a restaurant in the hotel about an hour before they stop serving. I like to ask the waitstaff for a carafe of coffee and then let them know they needn’t worry about me any further. I sit with a notebook and a stack of postcards and nibble and people watch. It is a bit of a travel ritual for me. I’ve done it in Orlando, Vegas, San Francisco, NY, China, Iceland, Brazil, and in the U.K.

Sherry: Jessie, that sounds like a fabulous way to spend a morning. Congratulations on the new book, Edith. I love to order something more complicate than we would make at home. Sigh, with my cooking skills that’s almost anything. It’s a great time to try something new, especially regional dishes. I have to say I tried fried toast in England and it wasn’t my favorite!

Barb: I love diners. For any meal, really, but especially for breakfast. My two favorites in Portland are Becky’s and the Miss Portland. Favorite orders: Omelet with cheese, ham and onions, or blueberry pancakes with syrup and bacon. I’m making myself hungry just typing this.

Liz: I love diners too! And I especially love when I find a diner that has food I can eat 🙂 Omelets are usually my go-to, with mushrooms and spinach, and home fries. And coffee. Lots of coffee!

Julie: I love breakfast, and could happily eat it for every meal. I am an Eggs Benedict fan. I usually order it, since I never make hollandaise sauce at home. Lately, the S&S (a favorite local spot) has expanded on my go-to with Eggs Oscar. Poached eggs on potato pancakes, topped with asparagus and crabmeat. And, of course, the sauce. So. Good. That said, I’m also a pancake fan, and if I’m in a diner I always ask about the special.

Edith: Thanks for helping me celebrate, Wickeds! For breakfast out, I often order crispy  hash browns, which are so hard to make at home, with a fried egg. Like Julie, though, I don’t make hollandaise sauce at home, and I once had a California Benedict with avocado to die for.

  1. My sister gifted us a waffle iron years ago and my favorite breakfast is my husband’s banana waffles with bacon or a couple of sausage links. I like home fries too, and a good, flaky biscuit, and pancakes, and……
    Congratulations on the release of Biscuits and Slashed Browns. I’m really enjoying it. The Hoosier dialect is a riot!

  2. I’m not really a breakfast person. If food is in front of me I eat, but I live alone and start the day by making coffee. In winter I eat half a grapefruit and use the last of the juice to take my first batch of meds. Two hours later I dissolve mucil in another cup of coffee. Two hours after THAT I look about for something non-dairy to take the calcium tablet with. Another two hours and I take a multivitamin with my first actual meal of the day, which may be nearing noon depending on when the other pills were actually taken.

  3. Welcome to Biscuits and Hash Browns, Edith/Maddie Day! I do love breakfast – who doesn’t? – and, like Barb, diners are my favorite. Two sunny-side up with hash, potatoes and raisin toast at the Classic Cafe in Arlington Heights MA – or, if I’m in the mood, their full Irish with scrambled eggs, sausage, blood pudding (I know, yuck – sorry), fried toast (love it) and tomato. Or, blueberry pancakes with sausages in the Club Car Cafe at the West Concord MA. Depot. And, I haven’t even mentioned the Agawam Diner on Rte 1 in Rowley MA, heading toward Newburyport – which I’ve been going to since I was a kid or the S&S in Inman Square -a big hangout during my young working life. Or the fabulous breakfasts at wonderful diners in Watertown and Newton. I think I’ll just hop in the car right now and go order some blueberry pancakes! Fun column. Thanks, Julie.

    I’m an Eggs Benedict snob, and try them wherever I go, searching for the best, with real Hollandaise–surprisingly difficult to find. In France, it’s pain au chocolat, every day. With espresso. Merci beaucoups.

    Locally, we have a chain called First Watch, which is breakfast and lunch only. They have a decent Benedict, although not the classic one. What I usually get is a Bacon Avocado omelet, served with home fries and fresh-made salsa.

    My husband years ago took up my habit of making pancakes on Sundays, and if the kids are home we still do it. He’s perfected buttermilk pancakes, so good.

  5. My favorite breakfast is French Toast with a little melted butter and then real maple syrup from NH. My husband has a friend who makes it and we buy it from him. My 2nd favorite is pumpkin pancakes. Now I’m getting hungry. My vanilla latte not cutting it. Congratulations on your book release. It’s on by TBR.

  6. Since all I ususally have for breakfast is tea and a bagel, I’m a big fan of the “full diner breakfast” when I go out: eggs, bacon, hash browns or home friends, pancakes with syrup…mmm!

  7. Congratulations on the release of “Biscuits and Slashed Browns”! I can’t say enough about this book. It’s amazing! I was fortunate enough to get to read an ARC and all I can see is get a copy and read it. You won’t be disappointed. ❤

    My breakfast would be a homemade pecan waffle with real maple syrup served with a side of country ham and a diet Pepsi. 🙂

  8. Love diners. Corned beef hash, fried egg and rye toast. And lots of local color! Sometimes friends and I do an all day ride and have breakfast, lunch, mid afternoon snack and dinner at diners over the couple of hundred miles we travel! Then we rate our diner choices!

  9. At home, pancakes preferably with fresh berries in or on them. And real maple syrup. Out? Anything , as long as there are excellent biscuits. Love biscuits and seldom make. Another treat is a fancy breakfast taco with ingredients I wouldn’t have on hand. I think I’m getting hungry…

  10. I love breakfast so almost everything is appealing. Our favorite little place is nearby and they always have just a little something special and different about everything they serve. We are particularly fond of their Eggs Florentine on tomato basil toast. Then there are their seasonal specialty: pumpkin pancakes to die for.

  11. I’m often torn between waffles (I love my maple syrup holders!) and an omelet, something I definitely only get when eating out.

  12. My favorite breakfast, when eating out is French Toast with a side of crisp bacon and lots of coffee. Edith, I am reading Biscuits and Slashed Browns and enjoying it very much. I love this series. It is what I like to call a comfort read. I feel relaxed and at ease when reading a foodie series like this one.
