The changing leaves have been breathtaking in their beauty this fall. Besides tall trees in brilliant colors against cerulean skies, what’s your favorite part of fall in New England (or anywhere else)?
The nights are sharp with starlight
And the days are cool and clean
And in the blue sky overhead
The northern geese fly south instead
And leaves are Irish Setter red
When fall comes to New England…”
Julie: Fall and I have a love/hate relationship. I hate that it is a precursor to winter, my least favorite time of year. But I love everything else. The blue, blue skies. The crisp weather. The fall fruits and veggies. I love that layers of clothing are sufficient, and that you can wear your black boots again. But my favorite thing about fall this year? Post-season baseball. GO SOX!
Barb: When I moved from the mid-Atlantic states to New England, I had to face the reality of changing my favorite season from spring to fall. Spring in Philadelphia, Maryland, Delaware and DC is long and glorious, filled with flowering bushes and trees. Spring in New England is six hours on the day the weather changes from cold and rainy to hot and humid. But fall is beautiful. The leaves, the warm days–every one of which feels like it was stolen from the encroaching winter. I love it, and this one has been particularly glorious.
Jessie: I love that autumn feels like a fresh start. My energy levels are on the rise after the summer heat has passed. I still have kids in school and autumn feels more like the beginning of a new year to me than January 1 ever does. It’s a time for high hopes and big plans.
Sherry: I try to block that winter is coming right after fall. I loved the view from our house on Hanscom Air Force Base. I also love Halloween with its costumes, candy and kids. We always carved a pumpkin.
Liz: Fall is my favorite season, largely because it’s Halloween time! There’s something about the crisp, fall air, the vibrance of the trees and leaves and the anticipation of the witching hour that makes it irresistible. Every year, even since moving to Connecticut, Salem, Mass. is my favorite place to spend some time. The entire month of October is like a non-stop costume party – anything goes in Salem! My favorite is the Bizarre Bazaar, where merchants line up in the street with their wares and costumed people act out the witch trials of the 1600s. Hot apple cider, treats and magic abound! Here’s Finn getting ready to show off his costume.
